By pledging to support the Technician Commitment, the UBMA will continue working with the recognition, visibility, career development and sustainability of technical skills at the forefront of everything we do. We are the 20th supporter of the Technician Commitment, joining a community of other professional bodies, organisations and networks dedicated to raising the profile of technical skills, roles and careers.
Membership of the UBMA is open to staff with resource management responsibilities, operating in departments, schools and faculties of universities and research institutes, in the fields of biological, biomedical and life science, or other similar related disciplines, such as agricultural or environmental sciences.
Our members aim to promote quality, effectiveness and efficiency in the management of bioscience resources across the university and research sector and seek to influence national policy toward developing and disseminating best practice and professional development of the technical workforce.
Dr Victoria Talbot, Chair of the UBMA said:
“The UBMA is delighted to be the Technician Commitment’s 20th supporter organisation. For over 40 years the UBMA, and its predecessors, the University Biological Supervisors’ Association (UBSA) and the National Association of Biochemistry and Biological Sciences (NABBS) have supported and encouraged bioscience technicians and their development within universities and research institutes.
"We know full well that our institutions need a well-trained and motivated technical workforce - whether that be in teaching, research or knowledge exchange – to succeed. It is also only right that our contributions and roles are not ignored but are recognised and valued. We therefore very much look forward to engaging with the Technician Commitment and our members in developing our action plan and joining the other supporter and signatory organisations in working to ensure technical careers are recognised, respected, supported, developed and aspired to.”
Clare Stevenson, Associate Lead, Technician Commitment said:
“It is important bioscience technical staff in universities and research institutes are recognised for the vital work they do on a day-to-day basis. By formally supporting the Technician Commitment, the UBMA is confirming its support of this critical group of staff who are central to biological, biomedical and life science research.
"We are delighted to welcome the UBMA and its members as the latest supporter of our growing initiative."
