The University of Portsmouth joins the Technician Commitment

The University joins a community of more than 110 higher education and research institutes.

The University of Portsmouth has become the latest higher education and research institution to join the Technician Commitment. As a new signatory, the University of Portsmouth pledges to ensure visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability of its 165 technical staff.

With roots as one of the largest polytechnics in the UK, the University of Portsmouth received university status in 1992 and ranks in the top ten of the Times Higher Education‘s young universities in the UK. The University excels in research areas from cosmology and astrophysics to cyber security, forensics and sport science and has made significant investments in services and facilities over the last decade.

Signatories of the Commitment collaborate with their technical staff to develop an action plan for how they will drive greater visibility, recognition, sustainability and career development for technicians.

Professor Graham Galbraith CBE, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Portsmouth, said:
“Our technicians are a vital part of our community and make a significant contribution to all of our activities. We could not function effectively in providing the highest quality education research and innovation without their expertise and support. Their work is integral to our success. Joining the Technician Commitment visibly reinforces our strong commitment to support, develop and nurture our technicians, to enable them to be the best they can be.”

Dr. Kelly Vere MBE, Programme Director, Technician Commitment said:
“We’re delighted to welcome the University of Portsmouth as a signatory. By joining the Technician Commitment, Portsmouth is recognising the huge contribution their technical staff make to their world class teaching and research and committing to work with them to drive positive change. We look forward to supporting them in their journey.”

The Technician Commitment has more than 110 signatories and supporters across higher education and research in the UK. The Commitment recently announced an international pilot that saw University of Sydney join the Commitment as the first international signatory.
