Vassilis, from London South Bank University, and James, from Edinburgh Napier University, were voted the winners of the Perception and Relationships zones after taking part in the online competition, where school students connect with scientists.
In an X Factor-style competition between scientists, students become the judges. They challenge the scientists over online chats and ask the scientists anything they want, before voting for their favourite.
Over two weeks, students across the UK tuned in to take part and to crown Vassilis and James as winners. Both technicians have won £500 which will go towards running science outreach activities at their places of work.
When speaking of competition, Vassilis said: “I would like to say a HUGE thank you to all the students and teachers! It was a great experience and I had such a good time chatting to the students, teachers and to other scientists! There are no words to describe how stimulating this experience was. Winner of the Relationships Zone, James, said: “I am over the moon to have been chosen as the winner after two weeks of excellent fun. The rush of answering 50-100 questions in 30 minutes was brilliant, and has helped me get a better grasp of what science means to the next generation. I am going to take what you have taught me, students, and not be afraid to ask more questions! I will recommend I’m a Scientist to any student, teacher and scientist.
