TECHNICIAN AWARD OPEN FOR ENTRIES IN THE ‘OSCARS OF EDUCATION’

This year, technicians will be recognised in the biggest celebration of UK higher education – THE Awards.

The event will showcase outstanding work across a wide range of university activity, reflecting the interwoven nature of so much of what they do.

Today Outstanding Technician of the Year opens for entries. The award, sponsored by the Technician Commitment , will be given to an individual whose exceptional practical skills, commitment and vision have enabled the highest quality of teaching, research or knowledge transfer.

Times Higher Education Editor, John Gill, said:

“For over a decade, the THE Awards have held a place at the heart of UK higher education, celebrating the extraordinary successes of our universities and all who work in them. This year, the ‘Oscars of Higher Education’ is getting even bigger and better, bringing together all aspects of university activity, including academic, pastoral, administrative and leadership success stories. Among an expanded group of familiar and refocused categories, we’re delighted to include a new one to recognise the Outstanding Technician of the Year – a chance for individuals in this significant section of the UK higher education workforce to receive much-deserved credit.”

Judges will be looking for evidence of a technician’s essential contribution and would like to hear examples of outstanding work during the 2017-2018 academic year.

The award is open to technicians working in any discipline in UK universities and research institutes. Entries will be accepted from institutions, individuals themselves, their colleagues or students and close on 5 June 2019.

Kelly Vere, Programme Director, Technician Commitment and Higher Education lead at the Science Council, said:

“We are delighted to launch Outstanding Technician of the Year as part of the 2019 THE Awards. Technicians across the UK are playing an essential role in education, research and knowledge transfer and deserve to be celebrated. The inclusion of this category in THE Awards shows the sector’s appreciation for technical staff and commitment to recognition. We look forward to receiving a flurry of nominations in celebration of the technical community and encourage all to get involved in this unmissable opportunity.”

Outstanding Technician of the Year will be presented at THE Awards on 28 November in London.
