Five North East universities produce video to promote visibility of technical careers

Durham University, Newcastle University, Northumbria University, the University of Sunderland, and Teesside University came together in a collaborative video to highlight technical careers to young people.

The purpose of the video was to increase visibility of technical roles and to secure the pipeline of local talent into the technical workforce, including hosting T Level placements and apprenticeship programmes. The video was created by creative arts technicians and showcases a broad range of technical activities done by technicians in the region’s universities.

With aims to improve messaging on technicians working in universities, technicians from the five Universities of North East England (UNEE) produced and shared the video with North Tyneside Learning Trust (NTLT) who in turn will use it to promote exciting technical roles which exist in universities across the region to young people in schools.

Following its initial premiere to an audience of 400 technicians at the Technicians Partnership Conference 2024 last June, the video is now a long-term resource for NTLT and garnered encouraging feedback from a senior governance group of the UNEE, raising further the visibility of technicians across the region. Following positive feedback, technical representatives from the five UNEE will be meeting in early 2025 to explore new ways to collaborate further.

Mel Leitch, Deputy Head of Infrastructure in the Faculty of Medical Science, Newcastle University said:

“This is a great example of how technical expertise can come together for a common purpose producing professional quality outputs.  It could not have been done without the creative arts technicians from all five universities and the support from the Collaboration Fund. I look forward to seeing how this new regional collaboration evolves over the coming months and years.”
